What is Rorum?
In the world of Septima, the source of their 'magic' is called Rorum. Rorum are the basic particles that formulate all of the magic within the world. While molecules and atomic structures of things still exist, alongside these things are particles called Rorum that many beings on the Islands are able to subconsciously gather and use.
The use of rorum and their applications is known as Roric Artes. By accumulating rorum to oneself naturally and expelling in a specific manner (either chanted in Wordsweaving or using an enchanted item like a rod or stave), one can wield great destructive or healing power depending on its use. Rorum can be distilled into soft, jelly-like forms called Rorogels. These rorogels are a recent invention by a famous human scientist that spent years creating a concentrated, solid form of rorum, and were quickly mass-marketed to adventurers as aids to their journeys. Strangely enough, all rorogels seem to form two small black dots that appear like eyes at first glance, giving them the appearance of a cute mascot. Many shops have created plush replicas of rorogels and are very popular with children and women. |
Relationship with the roravi
Throughout history, the winged Roravi people have been described as the most apt with using rorum in their daily lives. Their large, populous cities are rife with technology and science that use rorum efficiently, and they themselves have a natural born ability to use roric artes. This is due to the structure of their wings and how it interacts with rorum in the air.
One can think of rorum like moisture, or dew. On a roravi's wing, the smooth, thin surface is an attractive place for rorum to accumulate. If one were to touch a roravi's wing, one would find a very slight wetness to it, as if it were gently misted with water. The accumulation is not true moisture, but a mix of water content and rorum sticking to the roravi's wings. This is the primary reason why the Roravi are generally skilled at Roric Artes. For a Roravi, their wings are so efficient at collecting rorum that sometimes it collects too much. At that point, a roravi's wing may literally start sagging and dripping with moisture, and it becomes very difficult for them to control the output of their spells. This is very dangerous for a roravi, and many are taught how to properly shed the rorum before using any spells. |
Relationship with humans
Humans have recently (within the last 200 years) have discovered that they, too, can utilize rorum. With roravi trade more prevalent, humans have adopted various technology and methodology of applying rorum to their daily lives. Many of their main uses include lighting lamps in cities, powering light machinery and distilling for use in rorogel form, either as medicine or solid rorum to be transported and sold.
With an increase of rorum use, humans have learnt to also use the rorum on their bodies to cast spells and use Roric Artes just as the Roravi can, often under their tutelage or studying ancient texts on their own. This can lead to dangerous situations if left unchecked, as humans are unable to control their rorum carefully. One can think of a human's rorum usage like a sponge—while humans can collect rorum on their bodies easily, controlling the outward flow of the rorum is not as easy. It takes many years of dedicated training for a human to use the Roric Artes. Many choose to become adventurers and learn under a Wordsweaver master.
