How to learn skills

A skill is an action or ability an adventurer can use in the course of battle or questing. In Crown of Septima, skills are essential for making your characters powerful and to participate in Job Quests and Raids. Even if they do not do battle, an adventurer could have many skills to assist the Guild! Even newbie adventurers can get started learning skills right away.
There are 4 disciplines (types) of skills: Proxima (melee), Distancer (ranged), Wordsweaver (magic casting) and Artesan (crafting/gathering). Read more about them on the Skill List pages!
It's important to understand that these are NOT 'classes' like your typical RPG. Your character can learn any skill from any of these four categories! However, certain requirements must be met before they can learn a skill.
Important note: These requirements do not have to be done in order! You may choose to draw a skill learning artwork before having the necessary EXP, or wait until your character has accumulated enough EXP to draw their skill learning. Skills only need to be logged and confirmed on your character's tracker when they meet all three of the below requirements.

1. Characters must have the listed EXP count

2. Proof of advancement for tier 2/3 skills (Badges)Tier 2 and Tier 3 skills are special where your character must go through a test at the guild to prove that they have mastered the discipline at that level. This is a special quest that characters may undertake called the Tier Advancement Quest, and when the quest is cleared the character will earn a Badge marked on their masterlist that they may learn the new set of skills. Tier Advancement quests only unlock for one discipline at a time, so choose wisely for sign ups! For more info, see the Job Quests and Raids page!
To see if your character has the Badge needed to undertake Tier 2 or 3 skills, please check the public masterlist! Simply hover over the badge cell of the appropriate character to see if they have the right Badge. |
3. Skill Learning artwork requirementTo confirm your character's learning of their skill, you must submit a piece of artwork that is coloured and shaded of your character using or learning the skill. This requirement is called the Skill Learning piece, and must be submitted to the Journey's Path of Adventurers folder to officially count. Feel free to depict them learning the skill in unique and creative ways, up to your interpretation. Once you have finished all that, you do not need to wait for moderator approval—you may add the skill to your character's potential grid on their tracker deviation. |
Submitting your art to the right folderAll skill learning artwork goes into the Journey's Path of Adventurers folder. There are no exceptions. Due to this limitation, this means that your characters may only learn 3 skills a week. You may decide to split this amongst your registered characters, or have one character learn 3 skills in one week. You decide! However, please remember that the Journey's Path folder is also shared with EXP-gaining canon artwork of your characters. If you submit other artwork in the Journey's Path folder in the same week, you will use up one submission to that folder (you are only allowed 3 per week in that folder). Decide in advance if you would like to spend your week unlocking skills for your character, or just drawing artwork for submission, or a mix of both. |
Placing skills & the skills compendium
Learning skills is good and all, but how should they be placed on the grid? Here are the three basic rules to follow.
(Remember, only skills on the potential grid count for potential rating!)

All learned skills are tracked on the character's tracker deviation, under Skills Compendium.
The Skill Compendium on your character's tracker is a complete list of skills that the character has unlocked. When a new skill is learned, please update your tracker! As long as they are listed in the compendium, they are considered learned. Vertical Divider

Empty slots must be filled first. If there is an empty slot, the next skill learned must go into that slot.
New skills can be learned even if you do not have space for it on your grid. Simply list the new skill in your character's tracker under the Compendium list. If a new slot is opened by using a Stimulant, you may either draw a new skill, or fill it with a skill from your character's compendium. Vertical Divider

Skills, once placed, may not be moved or swapped with another without use of an Altertea.
Using an Altertea on your character allows you to swap, re-position, or remove a skill from your character's grid. The swap occurs between a skill on your grid and a learned skill from the character's compendium. This must be mentioned when you use the item! |
With all these skills, your characters are now powered up and ready to take a quest!
